Vantaa Energy, Sweco and Fira to implement a waste treatment plant using the alliance model
Vantaa Energy, Sweco and Fira have signed a project alliance agreement on the implementation of a waste treatment plant for non-recyclable waste. The agreement concerns the development stage of the alliance. The aim is to proceed to the implementation stage at the beginning of 2022.
Vantaa Energy has chosen Sweco and Fira as its alliance partners in the waste treatment plant project. In the alliance model, the partners are jointly responsible for the progress of the project and share the risks and benefits. With the help of the project alliance, the pre-design material commissioned by Vantaa Energy will be further developed and refined so as to provide even better support for the project objectives.
“The waste treatment plant implemented using the flexible alliance model will make an excellent addition to our waste treatment services for non-recyclable waste, and we are very pleased that we have Sweco and Fira, seasoned professionals in energy solutions and construction in the circular economy, as our design and implementation partners in a such a demanding project,” says Jukka Toivonen, CEO of Vantaa Energy.
The new waste treatment plant will be built in the Vantaa Energy power plant area north-east of the Porvoonväylä and Ring Road III intersection. The waste treatment plant will process the most common household and industrial waste classified as hazardous, and the resulting thermal energy will be used for energy production. The plant’s planned annual waste treatment volume is approximately 30,000–45,000 tonnes and surface area approximately 9,000 m2.
The preliminary planning of the project was commenced in the spring of 2020. The alliance project will be started with the development stage in August 2021, which will last about six months. The aim is to proceed to the implementation stage at the beginning of 2022. The plant is due to be placed in service in 2024.
Sweco and Fira have years and numerous projects of experience in energy industry and circular economy projects, and the parties have already successfully implemented similar projects together in the past.
“It is really great that Sweco had the opportunity to be involved in promoting the introduction of an industrial alliance model into this project. The Alliance team will work together to achieve the best outcome, and we believe that this will be the way forward in future private projects as well. Sustainably, efficiently, safely, and together – that’s the way these days,” says Erik Skogström, Managing Director, Sweco Industry.
“Fira’s strength lies in working together, innovativeness and ability to produce efficient solutions in response to the customer’s needs. It is truly inspiring that the chosen implementation model enables this power to be harnessed to the full benefit of the project”, says Tuomas Lankinen, Head of Project Development, Commercial Construction at Fira.
