Climate change mitigation
The aim of Vantaa Energy’s environmental work is to be a responsible and active operator in slowing down climate change. We are reducing greenhouse gas emissions not only in our own energy production, but also in projects we are involved in as part owner.
Our target is to phase out the use of coal in 2022
We are phasing out the use of coal in energy production in 2022. Coal will mainly be replaced by increasing the share of non-recyclable waste, wind and solar energy and geothermal heat in production. The most significant of the practical measures is the extension of the waste-to-energy plant. The construction work started in March 2020, and the extension of the waste-to-energy plant is scheduled for commissioning in autumn 2022. Finland has pledged to be free of coal by 2029 at the latest.
Renewable energy should account for 60% of energy production in 2025
In 2020, the share of energy produced with renewable energy sources was already above 60 per cent. Renewable energy sources include the biodegradable share of waste, biofuels, and water and wind. A total of 50 per cent of waste burned in the waste-to-energy plant is biodegradable.
Wind power production increased by 20 per cent on the previous year. Vantaa Energy has an important role in the production and development of Finnish wind energy.
Carbon-neutral energy will account for 80% of energy production in 2025
Carbon-neutral production accounted for almost 70 per cent of energy production in 2020. In addition to renewable energy, nuclear power is carbon-neutral production.
We are reducing our own energy consumption in accordance with the energy efficiency agreement by about 50 GWh per year, and we help our customers to monitor their energy consumption and save energy.
At the end of 2020, we started developing a service portfolio offered to our customers, to be published in summer 2021. The service portfolio will include elements for helping our customers to monitor their energy consumption and save energy.
About 35,000 MWh of recovered heat products were sold in 2020.
